Jumbo Mumbo

Today is the day I make some sense out of this mumbo jumbo. The leaves are stitched into place, but don't they look like a wind just scattered them everywhere?  I sure hope the placement was correct on these.  As I place the stems, it should all come together.

There now that is looking better. I always look forward to adding the stems, the block is beginning to make sense.

Next will be those flowers that are like little jewels that make the block sing.

Another cogwheel block almost complete. I will add some slow stitching to stich the center circle down.

Are you spending part of your day relaxing and putting in some slow stitches? Come join us at Kathy's Quilts and share your stitches!

  1. The leaves did look a bit random until you added the stems! :-)

    1. I always doubt my placement even though I am careful and use a light box. I feel I can breath again once the stems are put in place.

  2. So many leaves look time consuming. The stems do make sense. Good job! I have yet to applique leaves and stems.

    1. I love leaves they are fun to applique and I use a bias tape maker for the stems. Since they are cut on the bias they lay nicely on the block. Now the flowers are intense but this too shall pass.

    1. Yes, they added the order that was needed. A few more leaves on some of the stem ends and I will be ready to move on to the layered flowers. Thanks for your kind words.

  5. Oh, another cog wheel! Beautiful. You are just whizzing along!

No slow stitching of anything for me today...grandkids are here. We've been picking pumpkins and squash and tomatoes from the garden and they helped make pumpkin pies and pumpkin muffins and ate tomatoes until they were full while grandma canned them. I'm too tired for anything else. Thank goodness I'm off work tomorrow.

  7. Those leaves reminded me of my ride home - a bit windy with leaves blowing everywhere! My pattern is having me do the stems, then the leaves. Love the touches of red in the flowers - so pretty.

    1. That bud had to be done first as a stem went over it. Little things like that add a lot of dimension to a block. I am learning to really look at the pattern before I start. In the beginning of this quilt I would have to unstitch sometimes to get the layers right, but now I plan better. I always love when I can start adding the red.

    1. I hope that you do! They are fun! I also paper pieced a compass block last summer that I want to use in the center of this quilt. I still need to work out the math and hope to add some epp pieces to give it more pizazz!

    1. I have a light box which helps a lot. I no longer worry if the placement is dead on, close is good enough. I also draw out the stems on the back of the block so when a leaf has to go under the stem, like these do, I have that reference on the back to double check. It does get easier with a lot of practice. Baltimore Garden is giving me plenty of practice.

  11. Out of what appeared to have been chaos has come something beautiful! It'll be even more beautiful once you get the flowers appliqued on.

    1. You are so right, Kathy! It looks even better today as I got all the stems stitched down and the leaves that were placed at the ends of some of the stems. I started the eight buds and need to add five flowers to finish this one off.
