Chevron Progess

Yesterday, I had a marathon sewing day.  I really want to get this top finished in time for my daughter's birthday.  So I started the day early in the sewing room and just made a day of it.  I finished trimming the half squares triangles and then started to assemble them into the blocks that will make up the quilt.

Although retrimming all the HST's took a lot of time it was time well spent

It went pretty well, until later in the afternoon when I realized I had sewn three blocks wrong.  Time to pick out some stitches and rest, tomorrow is another day.  I was able to finish 56 of the 72 blocks I need.  So hopefully today I get the last 16 blocks made and I can start assembly of the top.  I plan to do it in quarters so that I can continue to support the pieces on my sewing table top.

    1. Thanks, I think I can too now, but I want to have plenty of time to do the machine quilting. Nothing fancy just straight line, but I will be out of my element.

  2. Your chevrons are really coming along! You have been so productive! I'm learning a lot from you for the next time I work with a lot of triangles (like the pinwheel quilt I have on my list).

    1. The blocks are going together really well. I can't say they would be perfect enough for a perfectionist, but I am impressing myself and improvement is always welcome. I can see where this quilt could be come a bit of a nightmare. I am so glad that I am taking every precaution to keep it in line.

    1. I forgot about you making one, but now that you mention it I remember following along. This method works well. It is so easy to get out of whack when piecing, especially for me. Give me some curves and I am so much happier.

  4. Wow - coming together so quickly. Do you have plans on how you will quilt it?

    1. Yes I do, Deb! Straight line machine quilting. Very simple nothing fancy. I don't want to take anything away from those chevrons, I only want to emphasize them. I do know I am using a very light teal thread because I am using a solid teal back. I am really excited about the binding, some black and white polka dots, what do you think?

  5. Oh this will be lovely. I can empathize about sewing blocks the wrong way--and even sometimes just thinking they're wrong only to find that they were right after all...ack! Hugs, Julierose

    1. Oh I have done that too! That is when it is time to get up and walk away. So far these blocks are going together pretty well. I spent another marathon day, this is a lot like work. But I would like to get it in the mail next week as it has to travel half way across the country to be there in time for her birthday.

  6. Very striking. And I think the straight line quilting and the polka dot binding will be perfect. What a lucky daughter to get just what she wants for her birthday.

I tried the sewing around two squares and cutting in quarters to make HSTs once but didn't really like that method.I can't really say why because it was pretty accurate. I've found my HSTs turn out best by cutting with the Easy Angle ruler.

    1. I have a easy angle ruler but haven't tried it yet. I know Bonnie Hunter uses them a lot. I am not a real fan of piecing but once in while I can handle it. There are so many great quilts made out of HSTs.
