Ready for September

Well I  made it! Thankfully, there were five Saturdays in August.   I had to slip in making a quilt for my daughter this month, which put everything on hold.  But this week I got all my August  RSC 2014 blocks finished.  Each month I make 3 pickledish blocks and a large wonky star block.  It's all down hill from here and I am looking forward to our next color in September.

I also have been working on some cogwheel blocks that I started last summer.  They kind of went to the back of the list of active projects.  My summer push was finishing my Baltimore Garden blocks.  But I am needing a little vacation from my applique.  So I decided since I only need eight of these to finish them up why not fit them into the picture.

The one on the left still needs to have the center circle appliqued down.  Still trying to use up scraps and pieces that are in my stash.  I have a piece of chintz that I want to use as the background in this quilt.  I hope to make some more design decisions once I get all eight cogwheels done.  Really flying by the seat of my pants here, a whole lot of fun! If your scraps are getting out of hand may I suggest going over to Angela's blog and see what others are doing with their scraps.

    1. I machine stitch the centers. I made a paper foundation of a point and a background, after I make twenty four I sew them together into a circle The next step is to remove the paper and sew the center and the paper pieced circle together.

    1. They are fun especially since I got to pull scraps to make them up. I love that each one is different but the colors are all pulled from the chintz. Hopefully I can come up with a great way to bring it all together.

    1. I have really come to love working with curves. My solution to not being able to sew a straight line. LOL

  7. Great pickle dishes and the cog wheels look so complicated but you make them sound easy in the reply. What a combination of techniques in one little block.

    1. Well all I had was templates so I figured that was the easiest way for me. I just discovered paper piecing a couple of years ago and it comes in handy for this sort of project. Love the copy option on my printer makes my quilting so much easier.

    1. It's a fun block Julierose! I think this may be one quilt that I would like to make twice. It is such a nice to work on a larger project to just concentrate on making a few blocks each month.

  13. And the reason I bought the book for myself was because I've loved those cog wheels ever since I saw you making them. And, sheesh, you made me have to purchase the pattern for Pickle Dish too. Well, thanks for such gorgeous inspiration!

    1. Thanks Karen! They are fun to work on. They are my little reward for doing some prep work on my applique blocks. They are so tedious, it is nice to have some machine work thrown in.

    1. I agree, I pulled out some orange and got the pieces precut for the paper piecing. I need to work on them as I have other commitments the last few weeks in September
