Hand Quilting

It's been a busy couple of weeks here.  Fall weather always is welcomed here in North Texas.  It is so nice to open up the house and enjoy the fresh air.  However, when it's in the low 80s or high 70's it can be too warm to get under a wool quilt and quilt very long.  But that is ok, there will be plenty of cooler days as we progress in the winter season.  I started quilting in the center of the quilt and have been following two panels to the edge.  I haven't quite reached the edge yet but I am almost there. Here is the progress on the front of the quilt.

I was surprised to find that stitching around all those leaves is really more enjoyable than the cable panel.  But, I am very pleased with the results and balance of stitching between the two different panels.

I remembered this morning to flip the quilt over and give you a look at the back.   So much fun to take it out of the hoop and get a glimpse of what the finished quilt may look like.   Still so many stitches to make but each one brings me closer to a finish and I am afraid I will be a bit sad when it's done and it's no longer in the hoop.   But, it seems there is always another quilt top waiting in the sidelines and the list of quilts you want to make is endlesss.

  1. I think I have that cable stencil but not positive it is really nice but yes sometimes so time consuming to quilt. We barely had a chance to have windows open when we got home before it got too cold! Today is so foggy and I'm not sure how warm and then by Halloween freezing at night and I still have outside work to do - I guess it will warm up after that again for awhile and I will finish up garden work

    1. Chilly here this week too with rain, but it is the season. Sure hope your right about at least a few warmer days ahead. The cable is fun to quilt but my favorite is quilting around applique.

    1. I love finishes as I spend so much time on each of my quilts, but it's bittersweet isn't it. They become like old friends and you don't want the coffee klutch to end.

  6. I just love your leaves quilt. I think the cable looks very nice. In fact, I need to mark a project for a friend and I think that cable would look very nice in a border. Thanks for the idea! Happy Stitching!

    1. I used the cable on another quilt in the border and yes its a great choice for that! I love looking at old quilts and love the traditional designs the best. I am not creative enough to design mine own but I do know what I like when I see it. I find the old designs are hard to beat as they say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

    1. A pink print was used in the original quilt, and I tried a lot of different colors and hoping a green would work but the pink really worked the best.

    1. I knew from the start that I wanted to make this more of a strippy quilt than the original that had thin sashing. I am really glad it worked out

  9. This is absolutely gorgeous! I am amazed first of all that you created the branches with multicolor leaves and then are now hand quilting it. What a wonderful quilter you are. Your stitch designs are beautiful. I hope this is for you to enjoy when completed.

    1. Thanks but it is my version of a quilt made years ago called trailing vines by a farm wife in Indiana. Susan Mc Cord made some magnificent quilts with bits of fabrics. I did change mine up with wider pink strips so I could add the cables.

  10. Your quilting looks wonderful! I love the multi line cable in the sashing. It's the view of my hoop too as I am also quilting my Trailing vines quilt. I love your picture of the back! Such lovely texture :0)

    1. Thanks, that's neat that we are both stitching on our trailing vines. I am so glad I took this one on, although I didn't make mine as large or with as many vines.

  11. This quilt is a beauty. Both your applique and quilting skills are amazing! Your quilt oozes pretty detail. Love the cable pattern for the quilting. It will be lovely for you to snuggle under this quilt as you stitch away come the cooler weather.

    1. Thanks, yes I guess detail is my thing. It's about results for me not how quickly a quilt can be finished. When you add the extra effort they become a joy to work on and that is why I am often a little sad when they are are done. We have had a frost the last two mornings so having the wool batt over me feels mighty nice.

    1. Thanks but much of the thanks should go to Susan McCord the original was made by her. I changed mine up with wider sashing. It's a great way to use up bits of fabrics.

    1. Thanks I was a bit worried about that but the small prints seems to let it shine thru and I think the wool batting helps too
