The third strip of my trailing vines quilt was finished this morning! I am thrilled with how the cables play off the curves of the vines. The heavy quilting takes time, but I feel it will be well worth it. Since it's my favorite part of making a quilt, it seems fitting to enjoy all the slow stitches that I can. Afterall, it's not how fast but how pleased I am with the results that counts. I do need to decide whether to slant all the 45 degree lines thru the leaf strips one direction or to alternate them????? So I would love hearing your opinion and maybe why you feel that way! A fellow quilter said a poll will probably not help with your decision, she most likely is right, but I would love to hear your opinion anyway.
Well it certainly is looking beautiful. And I like your comment that it's not how fast but how pleased you are with the results that count. I like the option of doing the diagonal stripes in the leaf strips because I think it would look more interesting that way.
ReplyDeleteYes it doesn't matter how many I love old heavily quilted quilts, they inspire me.
DeleteI think if you slant them in opposing directions that would lead the eye all over instead of just following those slanted lines to the left...I don't really know, but just sayin'. This is such a gorgeous piece--you are doing a beautiful ob on it...
ReplyDeletehugs, Julierose
Thanks Julierose. I think either way would work and will go with my gut feeling
DeleteI would probably slant them all in one direction like on the leave strip that you have done - but going in opposites would be interesting too
ReplyDeleteI agree it probably would work great either way.
DeleteI would slant them in opposite directions to add variety but your quilt! This is looking so gorgeous! Words just can't express how beautiful I think it is!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gretchen nothing better than hearing that from such a talented quilter. I hope you decide to make your version of a trailing vines.
DeleteI would probably alternate them if there are an even number of strips. I like symmetry. If there are an odd number of strips I would keep them all in one directions. I absolutely love how you are quilting this. It is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and initially I thought alternate would create nice movement but with the odd number of strips it may look a bit off
DeleteI love your progress... I hope you decide and share if you will slant the same or different with the blocks to either side... I like that you thought of that... I would have :D Your quilting is sublime on this quilt.. I can tell it is your fave!

Yes this quilt is a favorite. Just like Baltimore Garden it reflects the natural beauty of nature which always tugs at my heart strings
DeleteYour quilting is spectacular! I have no opinion on the slant, but I'm sure whatever you choose will be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I dont think it will make much of difference and the votes are a out 50/50
DeleteA outstandingly beautiful quilt. I going in just one direction, but can also see how changing directions would be nice too. You could try using the different direction on the next strip for about 12" and then decide. I know I hate to take out hand quilting, but sometimes I just have to do that to satisfy myself that I made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, but I think your right both ways probably would good.
DeleteI vote for alternating them...I can just picture it! I think it will look good partly because the lines of the cables alternate...know what I mean?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input time will tell
DeleteGorgeous quilting! Love seeing your progress!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karrin, love working on this quilt, so much fun
DeleteFirst of all, your quilting is gorgeous! I usually alternate the angles when quilting strippy quilts but I think it will be fantastic either way!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input! I agree either way is probably fine!
DeleteThis really is a lifetime achievement quilt! I can see making a case for the diagonal quilting either way, but I think *my* preference would be to have it alternate. Since the appliqued vines are not the same, I think the alternating quilting would set that off better, make each panel more distinct and eye appealing. BUT, it's hard to know for sure. Maybe you can mark a section of each across the bottom (like 8-10 inches) of each panel in a water soluble pen, just to see if you like it or not?
ReplyDeleteYes, this one has taken some time, but that's ok with me. I love heavily quilted quilts and taking time is one one of the benefits if you ask me! I guess that's why I am a bit sad each time I finish a quilt.
