Trailing Vines

I really need to get back to my applique project!  My poor trailing vines will never get done unless I put in some time.  I have three out of the five panels that I decided to make finished. Half down the fourth so it's time to give it some attention.  The original quilt is quite large and if I remember right it has thirteen panels of leaves.  I decided from the start that I wanted to make mine with the fabric panels and the appliqued panels the same width, more like a strippy quilt.

Yesterday morning the northern winds brought Texas some cold weather. The temps got down to 32F and we had a light frost. The lawn sprinkler ran at 5am and maybe that helped.  But those north winds get me thinking about my next hand quilting project.  I am thinking of quilting my star quilt but I want to use a wool batt and right now I don't have one. So I will have to see if I can get one locally or get one ordered.  Looks like I need to concentrate on my applique till then.  I know I may sound a bit hesitant and to be honest I am.  I love to hand applique but the prep work sometimes gets me down.  It makes such a mess and then cutting and pressing all the freezer paper templates and cutting out each leaf takes a tole on me.  But, I perservered thru Baltimore Garden so there is no reason I can't get this one done.  I find looking at a completed panel inspires me to move on. So I have hung them on the closet door for inspiration!  So today I will be stitching down some leaves as I watch the Cowboys play the Redskins.

    1. I have enjoyed stitching this afternoon. I just need to remember to keep enough leaves prepped so I can keep stitching. Closing the sewing room after I create the prepping mess helps too, out of sight out of mind!

  3. Your panels are beautiful, we are supposed to drop down into the upper 30's tonight in Florida, the temps have dropped 8 degrees in two hours. I may have to work on my big quilt today for warmth.

    1. Isn't it funny how the cooler temps get you in the mood to get under a quilt. Max woke up not feeling well. So I have him on the sofa under his doggie quilt. Sure hope he feels better tomorrow.

    1. Thanks! Yes we get a north wind down from Canada every once in a while. A month early for a frost but it is what it is. Back to stitching!

  7. Your panels look wonderful hanging on your closet door. Keep going - it will be worth it!! You will have fun quilting something in wider sashing panels :0) I had my trailing vines top out this week, I caved and ordered backing fabric because I could t find what I wanted locally - I'm getting it ready to start hand-quilting.

    1. Oh boy can't wait to see your stitching begin. Yes that is was my thought about adding wider alternate strips. I really need to think about what fabric I want to use!

  9. I love Susan McCords strip leaves and you must, too. But you're actually making them. Good job. So glad you're back on it, especially with some cooler weather.

    1. Yes Susan McCords quilts are the BOMB! Not sure I could do 13 panels but five or six is quite doable!

  10. Those panels are incredible! I think the prep work is one of the main reasons I don't applique. I admire your tenacity, and you will be so glad you did it!

    1. Yes prep work no matter what method you use almost takes all the fun out of it. I found making leaves for one branch at a time isn't too bad.

    1. I guess at this point in life, its some enjoyable me time. I don't think about finishing just enjoying each branch as it comes to life.

  12. I remember this one! Yes, you must continue on. Good luck. I'l cheer you on. I got as far as downloading some of the directions from some website after you inspired me but that was the end of it. (I made the Pumpkin Peel quilt instead. You inspired me to make that too. )

But, hey, the reason I don't do much applique is because I don't like all that prep work. If someone did it for me I'd be all about applique.

    1. Oh I agree! After Baltimore Garden I thought I would never applique again. This one is so organic and fun! The best part is there is no deadline to finish it!
