Week 2 RSC2014!

If you have followed my blog for any length of time, you know that I am one who loves antique quilts.  My quilts are traditional patterns in traditional colors.  Lovely thought isn't it, sometimes that can become mundane.  A while ago I started following Kathy' blog and I got involved in Slow Stitching Sundays. Right up my alley! I loved seeing all the projects that fellow followers were making.  I noticed that many of them were also involved with Angela's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.   Since I set a goal last year to try and use up my stash, I thought why not, I have collected some black and white fat quarters and some batik fat quarters also a few online purchases that just ended up not being the just right shade,  this would be a good solution to use them.   So, I jumped right out of my safe place into a world filled with color.

As I have said I am a little out of my comfort zone for this challenge, but I am hanging in there. Last week's block, started to make be wonder what I had gotten myself into. I had fun making it, but my brain is having a hard time seeing this quilt in my head.   But so many fellow bloggers seemed to like the block, so I decided to continue.  As I turned over the second block this week to press it, I almost panicked.  That gray isn't quite right, that is pretty ugly..............these were my thoughts.

Then I remembered this is a challenge and I decided to make my third block in blue.  This one contained the hand dye blue out of Vicki Welsch's color wheel fabric pack.  Such a beautiful blue, I just loved the block.

So, I laid them all out and WOW! I am so happy I pushed thru my fears.  So if you need a little push to get out of your comfort zone, head on over to RSC2014, there is a button on the right hand side of my blog that will take you to a whole new world of color and fun, anyway it is for me.  I only need three blocks of each color, so now I can't wait for February.

  3. That is a very intricate looking block. The three color/shading variations create quite different effects. Will you be making the same block with each color?

  9. Hello Carla, I'm quite new to your blog and I think you've inspired me to have a go - goodness knows I've got enough scraps! Your blocks are really lovely.

    1. Kate, That makes my day! You will find so many ideas and even tutorials on great scrap blocks. Nothing to loose, since that box of scraps isn't much good until you make something with them. Looking forward to what you come up with. Angela is doing a great sampler quilt out of six and half inch blocks if you can't decided on what to do.

    1. It helps to have such a inspiring group of scrappers out there. Not sure I will ever get to the point of using crumbs, but then one never knows!

  12. I just love this. I've seen various ways to make this and it seems far easier than the method I used for the Double Wedding Ring I'm working on which was from a free online pattern from McCall's quilting. I have a pattern in a Material Obsessions book called Gypsy Kisses (I think) that is similar and that one is appliqued (if I remember correctly). At any rate...glad you are breaking out of the comfort zone because I think you are going to love this quilt. If not then you can send it to me ;-)

    1. Thanks for your encouragement. I am not using applique but am paper piecing the stripes. The curves are fun to piece since they are gentle, a few picked stitches in the first two blocks, but less pinning and slowing my machine down and the use of a stiletto really makes them kind of fun to stitch. I am really looking forward to the next color.

    2. http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patterns/details.html?idx=6913 is the online pattern I'm using. The arches are paper pieced too. But instead of one set of arches per block they have you join 4 sets so it was difficult for me to assemble since basically there were no blocks. I think the pattern at Quilter's Cache was the same way. I like the method you are using and although where all the sets join there will be several seams and mine won't I think the assembly would be a whole lot easier than what I went through! If I try another one I think I'll draft my own pattern!
