Slow basting Stitches!

If you follow along on my blog, you know that I have finally started my  Tribute To GW (George Washington) quilt. It has been floating around in my head for quite awhile. It started with wanting to do an eagle applique block, some George fabric and feeling the need to get these ideas out of my head.    So today, I am starting to do some back basting on my eagle block.  I am starting with some red stripes for the flag!

This afternoon I finished one end of my patriotic chevron quilt.  I am big stitching 29 lines across the quilt and I have 17 complete with only 12 more to go. Over half way in a week! This quilt measures 72X72 so big stitching is definitely a way to get something done pretty quickly.

I will have my TATW quilt nearby and if I find enough energy it would be nice to  finish row 17.  It is half way complete as you can see in the picture.  Last night I had to stretch out my arms to fold it up, so it is starting to really grow.  I just love this project, each new fabric added changes it's look and it is a great way to use up some old fabrics in my stash.

  2. I guess it takes longer and longer to add a row to that trip around the world quilt each time! It looks great! I love the big stitch quilting on the chevron quilt too.

    1. Yes it does take longer with each round, but it doesn't get daunting! It is a bit like hand quilting more about the process. A nice in the background project that uses up those scraps that just never found a home!

    1. I am having so much fun coming up with blocks that I want to do. Love this process so much more fun than following a pattern. It is good feeling that I finally have enough skills under my belt to venture out into the unknown.

  7. I don't know anything about back basting... it is a method of applique?
Can't wait to see your ideas come to life!
    Enjoy your stitching!

    1. Yes it is a method of preparing for needleturn applique! I don't use it all of the time but it is great for tight curves or large pieces. A very good method for someone who is learning to needleturn as it keeps the piece right where it needs to be and you can just focus on your applique stitches.

    1. Yeah I really like working that way. I think it is also good for our hands to have a change of pace.

  12. You are just too funny tempting us with tiny snippets of that GW quilt, the Chevron looks like a winner, and the TATW is moving along. The TATW kind of reminds me of my great grandmother's braided rugs - pretty.

  13. I'm fascinated by your Tribute to GW. Look forward to that. What size are your big stitches? I heard they had to be big, but small enough not to snag toe nails. Your TATW is coming along great! Thanks for linking to WIPs Be Gone. Now I wonder what you'll show this week?
