Slow Basting!

Thought I would share my progress on my hexie project.  Two sides completed on my six sided project.  Then I need to decide what to do in the center. My original thought was an applique block, but I have also thought about a wonderful hand quilted motif.  I also need to think about what will be added next. It could stay a six sided quilt, or I could add star points the possibilities are endless.  I think that is what I am liking the best about this project.  I can do what I want, when I want, and it will be what it is.

I also like that I can take my little box with all my supplies and work on it anywhere.  A couple of weeks ago my husband had to have a test run at the hospital and I picked up my box and took it along.  Much to my surprise I had taken by needle keeper out to use on another project at home.  So there I sat in the waiting room not being able to stitch.  So I decided I really needed to make another one, when this week a envelope came in the mail. Deb was so sweet to send this little needle keeper with some great pockets in it to keep my scissors and other supplies.  It fits perfectly in my box, so now I don't have to find myself in that situation again.  Thank you so much Deb, that was so sweet of you.

Floribunda is still in the hoop.  I am using some wool batting, have you ever quilted using wool batting?  If not you really should, it is so true that it quilts like butter.  Another plus is the wonderful loft you get that really enhances your stitching.

So my Sunday will be filled with basting hexies and adding a few hand quilting stitches in  Floribunda.  With the Olympics and Downton Abbey on the tube it will be  a very enjoyable day. Of course I always love going to Kathy's blog and seeing what others are slow stitching.

  1. Both projects are lovely ...happy stitching / I cut out cable a year or so ago and the one and only time that I regret it is now...the Olympics / though I can still see highlights the next day on the Net / just no real-time. It's the figure skating that I love...that's gone on since I was young and fell in love with Peggy Fleming ! Wow has skating changed since then...all the jumps and such that they have to do.

    Well happy stitching ! :)

    1. I grew up watching Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming. Figure skating is still one of my favorite sports to watch.

  2. So glad it will be useful to you! I know you do a lot of hand stitching and I love mine for keeping the needles and scissors. I purchased some yellow to border my hexie flowers but now I am thinking I really like your black....... Enjoy your day of slow stitching.

    3. Linda, I made one this am for a quilting friend. They are pretty easy. Maybe I could do a little tutorial when I make the next one. It won't be for a few weeks though.

    1. Thanks Jill, I think that is what drew me to EPP, it can be so portable and having everything you need right in front of you anytime anyplace.

  4. that is a great take along project you are working on. Love the needle holder- one of my blogging buddies sent me one that she made in a different style and I keep that one full and in my take along box so I never forget it.

    1. I know a lot of people hand piece, it makes a lot of sense. Seems it would be a bit faster since you don't have to do all the basting.

  6. I like "I do what I want when I want. It is what it is" projects also. Beautiful hexie project. They look so small! And that was very sweet of Deb.

    1. They do fill a void when I am on the road or waiting for an appointment. Somedays I just work on them at home, because I want to!

  8. You have very beautiful hexes going on. It makes me want to get my hexie project out and work on them. I started them about 6 years ago. I still love Floribunda!

    1. Mine will be a long term project also. Somedays I just want to do something different and they fill the void when I am in between projects. Floribunda is one of those quilts that could work in any color.

  9. I also love working on projects that you make up as you go along! I have always wondered about wool batting... you make it sound very appealing, and it would make a very warm quilt.
Thanks for sharing your project at Slow Sunday Stitching!

    1. Kathy, the great thing about wool is it is light and breathes so it is good for keeping you warm, but it can also work in warmer weather. I use Hobbs and most brands are washable these days. It works great for applique quilts as it adds loft to fill the applique and it doesn't shrink so no distortion of the applique and really lets you showcase the quilting stitches.

  10. I love your hexie project. It's nice to see black showing up again. I really liked the black quilts - the colors really pop. I understand, and love, the white movement because the quilts are so bright and cheerful.

    1. I think there is definitely room for black and white backgrounds. I like to keep an open mind and use what fancies me at the time. I just placed an order for some white bella solids for an upcoming quilt, so I pretty much love it all.

    1. Basting is great in front of the TV or in the car. I agree about the needle keeper, it keeps all the important things in one place.

  12. Ah, what a wonderful Sunday you have planned Carla! I plan to spend time with the Olympics a little later, and of course Downton Abbey. Love your colorful hexies - can't wait to see what the finished project will be :*)

    1. Wouldn't the world be a better place if we could all set aside a day to relax and enjoy our craft. I love the way the colors pop on the black background hexies, It is fun to pick which color to add next.

  13. I love following along with your hexie project ... I've fallen victim to the addiction that is EPP/hexies. I love how portable they are ... I took mine along with me to the swim meet this weekend, but it was so packed on the pool deck that the only time I got to get any basting done was on the car ride up. :-(

I keep thinking about trying a wool batting one of these days.

    1. I agree, they are also great for a change of pace or just because you want to do mindless stitching. I think you would really like wool, and I love Hobbs poly down too, it is the next best thing to wool. The new polys are not scratchy and stiff.
