Slow Stitching Sunday

I have been following Kathy's blog for sometime now. She hosts Slow Stitching Sunday's for all those that enjoy hand work.

Today, I will start another block on my Red and Green Traditional Quilt.  It is the cotton boll block.  When I appliqued this block I was surprised at the difficulty I was having. Looking back I think I should have used the back basting method and saved myself a lot of frustration.  That is the wonderful thing about quilting, it is such a journey, each quilt teaches me so much.

Non quilter's often mention that they wouldn't have the patience to make a quilt. I don't think it has anything to do about patience. Perseverance is probably a better word. Some of us just love the journey, seeing it to the end is important for me! Some quilters love the thrill of starting a new quilt, but for me, the best part is all the stitches I put in to finish it! So, each day I put in a few stitches and each day I get closer to finishing! Thanks Kathy for helping to spread the love hand stitching!

  1. I just come here to get inspired :) Years ago when I first thought about learning to sew and quilt, it was quilts like yours that inspired me. I knew I was not capable of quilts like that at the time but they were pretty / complicated, stunning, etc. After a long hiatus I got back to this hobby last November and when I am in the fabric store looking through the magazines I am amazed that there is very little out there to inspire, as in most of the quilts are quick and easy and I did not see the complicated sort that I was used to seeing years ago. Very little traditional quilts...that sort of thing. So I love when I come across a blog like yours :)

    1. Such kind words Deb! Thank you, you have made my day! I started blogging to keep a record of my quilting journey. It is like icing on the cake that I can inspire others to try quilting or continue their journey. Keep pics of what you love in quilts and then head that direction and go for it. I never thought anything I made could inspire someone, hopefully someday you will say the same thing.

  3. Perseverance is such an important word -- not just in quilting. That ability to get through the difficult parts and keep moving forward is such an important lesson. Your hand quilting is looking fabulous. Though it might take longer, it is such an enjoyable process with such lovely results.

    1. I agree it is a important thing to learn in life. I think most would find if they do what they love they would be so much happier than trying to rush along and do it all. Your little blocks are so wonderful, but I find piecing difficult, so I finally decided to make quilts that showcase my hand quilting. I love that about quilting, you can take it in so many directions.

  4. Inspiring post Carla! I agree about enjoying the journey. I thought I was doing well to keep track of 4 threads, but am amazed at how many threads you have going at the same time...WOW! Thanks for linking up to Slow Sunday Stitching and sharing your stitching!

  5. Thanks Kathy, When I do grid work I always pull out my needles and leave the tails. I have a clover needle threader so I just rethread once I move my hoop, seems to speed things along. I also thread about twenty needles to start, I get so much more done if I don't stop to rethread the same needle.

  6. Your blocks look great whatever method you are doing. Quilters are a unique group and that we can do multiple things at the same time.

  10. I just love coming here and seeing your beautiful quilts! The hand quilting really does inspire me to attempt more things. I agree that perseverance is an important thing to learn in life. I just love that in little bits of 'wasted' time I can accomplish so much and have something tangible to account for the hours in my day. It always amazes me at the people that say 'I don't have time for that'. If you love something, somehow you manage to 'find' the time to do it. Thanks so much for your kind words and beautiful inspiring quilts. Time for me to do some applique today while waiting for the kids!

    1. Thanks Deb, my mom used to say if there is a will there is a way. I started out wanting to learn to machine quilt but I was not happy with the process or the results so I learned to hand quilt. I also get bored with piecing the same blocks over and over, so applique was a better fit. So glad that you have discovered applique and what a great way to be productive while waiting for your children.
