Boy it has been on crazy day! I finished my first panel of Trailing Vines on Saturday and woke up this am thinking " I don't have anything to slow stitch today! "
So I got out the next panel and pressed a few more branches and started glue basting them in place. I have never been a big fan of using glue, but I do like it for basting these long strips. It really made for the arduous task of prepping so much more bearable! It was quite time consuming and when I got the stems done I realized I still wasn't ready for any slow stitching!
So that is when my eye caught a glimpse of Baltimore Garden all basted and draped over the quilt hoop. I really could use a break after all that prep work, so I got out my quilting templates I had made and started thinking about what I wanted to do and it all seemed to come together. It didn't take me long to trace around a few templates so I sat down to put in a few stitches. I am thrilled that I have gotten over the hump of just starting! At least now the decisions have been made and I can sit and stitch a bit here and there when the mood strikes. Since I prefer to hand quilt by the light of day, I still needed some hand work to sit and stitch this evening!
Indian Summers is starting tonight on Masterpiece Theatre and I really like to stitch as I watch. So, it was back to prepping the leaves for the first branch of panel 2 glad to have all this prep work behing me. First I am heading over to Slow Stitching Sunday with Kathy and the rest of slow stitchers to get inspired as I sit down and finally get to enjoy some of my own slow stitches.

Oh my, Carla, you have been busy on Slow Stitching Sunday. I like the hand quilted flower design that you chose. A classic.
ReplyDeleteYes it is a classic. It was used on the original quilt so I am so thrilled that it will also be on my version. It amazing what you can get done when you want to do some slow stitching!
DeleteThose are the two hard things... the prep and the decisions... it's all fun from here on in!!
ReplyDeleteI have put in a few hand quilting stitches and really like my decisions so far! That makes it even better.
DeleteThat hump of just starting can feel like a mountain sometimes. Glad you've crossed it ... looking forward to seeing more.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about starting. But its worth it!
DeleteSo much prep on a project like this but glad to see you were able to enjoy some hand quilting as well :)
ReplyDeleteThere is, but Janet's instructions really make it go well. I sure hope it cools down soon so I can spend more time under that wool batting. A bit too warm right now to sit too long.
DeleteSo glad you got the hard part done - prep work and decisions. The panel looks great and love the decision on the hand quilting.
ReplyDeleteI have put in a few hand quilting stitches this week but it is a bit warm under the wool. LOL Your so right the prepping is a necessary evil. It really goes quite quickly if you just get to it.
DeleteSounds like a lot of stitching to me! Love the first panel. This one is definitely on my "someday" list.
ReplyDeleteI must say I am really enjoying the applique on Trailing Vines. Janet's pattern and instructions really are great! She was so generous to share it on her blog.
DeleteThat's a LOT of leaves! And I understand the hours it takes for prep! Balitmore Garden is beautiful and will be even more so after it is quilted! I watched Indian Summers well...enjoyed it very much. I love public TV.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the first episode and look foward to more. Yes the prep work isn't my favorite but it really isn't too bad once you get going. Now I have plenty of stitching to do for sure.
DeleteI hate that feeling I get when I realize there's no hand sewing ready to go! Loving your leaves--so cool!
ReplyDeleteI love Susan Mc Cords quilts. All those bits of scraps and she turned them into amazing quilts out on the Indiana farm. Back at the turn of the century before all the modern quilting tools we have. Genius!
DeleteIt really is nice to get started with the stitching decisions, settle in and know you're doing it the way that is best for your quilt. Lots of work with that prep! I think that counts as slow stitching, albeit leading up to some.:)
ReplyDeleteYeah I hate starts, finishing is much more fun! I really should try and keep track of quilting time on Baltimore Garden as with this one more is better. LOL
DeleteOh, my...finished a panel already? That quilt looks like fun. I'm not a good one for prep work or I'd give it a try. Looks like you are off and running with all those different quilting templates you made for your Baltimore Garden. Beautiful and inspirational quilting.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun! Once you get the vines prepped its just a matter of stitching the leaves!
Deleteyour first vine looks awesome
ReplyDeleteA bit like eating potatoe chips, I just can't stop!
DeleteThat's a lot of prep work! The first panel is lovely, so worth it but you must be patient. I like the start of your hand quilting; that's a very sweet little flower.
ReplyDeleteI love the vine panel and especially the scrappy leaves! Enjoy the hand stitching, I find it relaxing.
ReplyDeleteI've always admired this pattern and it looks like it could be addictive! Nice job.
ReplyDeleteI make a similar little dolly quilt and ironed the bias vines in place which held them long enough to transfer it to a table to baste. But I have to say I do like to use Sewline glue sticks - not the liquid glues. Your vines are lovely and the hand quilting too
ReplyDeleteYou have two amazing projects going and your hand quilting is just beautiful.
