Wow! Another Sunday has arrived. Lately it seems that time just passes by so quickly. I was very busy this week but found the time to get the hand quilting done on Simple but Not. It seems ages ago that I had a finish. I still have to sew one side of the binding down and then I can enjoy some slow stitching as I sew down the binding. I just love this step! I think, that is because as I stitch, I realize that all the time I spent on this project is just about to pay off. After the binding is stitched down it will go into the washer and dryer and then the big reveal. I am pretty sure I will be adding some trapunto to the feathers. It may not happen right away, I will lay the quilt across a guest bed and give it some time to speak to me.
I also found a bit of time to add a few more rows on my TATW. This is my first attempt at hand piecing. So far I enjoy it immensely. I have run out of squares to add so this week I need to cut some more two inch squares. I think I have chosen the fabrics for rows 13-16. That should keep me busy for a while. I don't work on this every day, but I love that is there waiting for me on those evenings when I am not in the mood for my other projects and it is great take along project. Have you ever tried hand piecing? Right now,

Love that you are binding Simple but Not.. and love the progress on your TATW! I am watching Jenny's BOM and enjoying it immensely... unfortunately I can't play along now but I have it to call on when I make time! lol Glad you had a good week! ReplyDeleteI not playing along either but have gotten some great tips and techniques that are helping me with my current project. Not sure I will ever do the BOm quilt but one never knows.
DeleteLove your TATW quilt top. I enjoy hand piecing too.....and am wondering.....did you start this with one center square, then continue adding "rounds" setting in all the squares as you go? (Clear as mud?!!!) I did one this way also, and like it better than starting in a corner, following a color chart. Your feelings?
ReplyDeleteYes I started with the center square and am working in rounds. It sure makes it fun and you like you said no following a chart. The last round will be quarter square triangles!
DeleteI think you were quite productive this week. I have never tried hand piecing, I do like handwork--but my stitches are not tiny as hand piecing requires!
ReplyDeleteThe nice thing about craftsy classes is once you add a class to your library you can watch it and go over it as many times as you wish. It stays in your library so to speak. Jinny makes her stitches in a gathering fashioin or it can be done by folding the fabric back and forth so nice small stitches are made easily.

ReplyDeleteI love using solids with prints. I also love that my hand quilting doesn't get lost in the prints and becomes equally important as the pieced parts. Somthing I learned from studying antique quilts that I liked, they really knew what they were doing and as they say if it works don't fix it.

ReplyDeleteI probably won't do the BOM but I have already gained some great tips about hand piecing. Living where we do it is so nice to be able to take a class with a master. Although its only virtual, it has a great platform and I love that you can go over the lessons any time you want.

Thanks Deb! I had no idea what kind of binding to use and a friend just said to audition. I love to use stripes so I pulled it out and it won. I really thought a blue would look good but when I tried this it said Yes use me!
DeleteFinally another quilter who enjoys the binding process ... so many remark how sad they feel when finishing a quilt ... I'm like you - I'm excited about the work and time finally paying off with a finished quilt to use or gift. ;-)

I've signed up for Jinny's BOM class ... not for the BOM, but for some lessons on hand piecing. As much as I love hand work, I can't believe I've never tried hand piecing. That's going to change ... not right away, but her class (and her hand piecing book which is in my library) will be waiting for me to watch when I am ready to tackle that first hand piecing project.
I am not doing her BOM either but who knows I just may someday. I am so thankful for craftsy, we don't have any LQSs nearby so no real chances for classes. I also love that it stays in your library to be watched over and over.

DeleteI'm waiting for that big reveal! I didn't realize you could add trapunto later. I haven't tried hand piecing. I'm sure I'd enjoy it. Maybe someday after I finish all my UFOs I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteYeah I use the darning needle method. I add chunky acrylic yarn. But once you start there is no going back as it would be difficult to remove. So I like to give some thought before I start!

ReplyDeleteCame across the facebook group that has been making these. A perfect solution for some stash fabric that needed to go bye bye. I love that no matter what you add it just keeps adding to the charm. A great project to try hand piecing as you work in rounds.

ReplyDeleteI have been fretting about the binding for the past couple of weeks. I usually know what I want to use, but this one had me stumped. A quilting friend reminded me to just audition. I always have loved striped bindings and had just enough of this fabric. I liked the way the stripes played off the pieced seeds. While stitching it down, I was wondering if I was crazy to choose it. Now that I just finished it up, I am pleased. Whewwww! Just threw it in the wash! Looking forward to your red version!
