Hand Piecing

Today I hope to add at least part of round 10 on my Trip Around the World.   I started this right before Thanksgivng and have had fun learning to hand piece.  I am just using some strips of fabric that I found in my scrap box. Kind of wild and crazy but I love how it changes with each round that  I add.  I am aiming for 20-22 rows that should make a nice size baby quilt.
My little start right before Thanksgiving

Nine rows completed!

I finished up my pickle dish and wonky star tops from the RSC 2014. So they will get hung in the closet. They will have to wait their turn to get quilted.

This morning I will continue to work on "Simple but Not". I have the center completely done.  The quilt is comprised of four large blocks, so I think the best plan is to pick one block and complete it before moving to the next.

I hope you find some time to enjoy some slow stitches too!

  1. With so many spectacular projects on the go, you must have a hard time picking which one to work on today! Love each one!

    1. It does get hard sometimes especially when they are close to a finish. I need to put together a plan of attack for next year.

    1. Thanks it is was so fun to do! I usually get bored machine piecing blocks so doing three a month made this doable for me!

    1. The squares are cut 2 inch to finish at 1.5 inches. I love that it is worked in a round! It is also fun to see how each color changes how it looks.

    2. You got me! I needed them for the wait at the dentist for the kids today. Did red, orange, yellow and half of the green while waiting. I blamed you in the post! =) Thanks - nothing else prepared and that was quick since I had 2 inch squares already cut and some strips hanging around.

  6. Oh, I love your scrappy Trip. I was going to ask the size of the squares but see you answered it. I'm anxiously awaiting your quilting on the Pickle Dish. If I ever get my last row added on I'll be looking for good quilting ideas. But your idea will probably be more than I can handle. Your quilting on Simple But Not is anything but simple and it's gorgeous to boot.

    1. Thanks Cathy! The quilting on Simple but Not is the Not part! I love the look of that bit of fancy quilting next to those simple scrappy pumpkin seed shapes. Although it isn't all that hard, the same feathered shape repeated next to all the seeds and cross hatching to fill in. I got an email this week from a quilter from Washington state who wanted to know who the long-armer was that quilted it. Made me giggle. Best compliment I have ever gotten! I plan on big stitching my pickle dish. No concrete ideas yet!

    1. Thanks for stopping by and your kind words. I love quilts where the quilting is just as or maybe a bit more important than the piecing.

  8. Love that TATW and I love the wonky stars quilt ... oh, who am I kidding? I love all the quilts you're working on!

No slow stitching for me ... swim meet in the morning, finished Christmas shopping in the afternoon, collapsed at home this evening ... I'm worn out! ;-) Slow stitching tomorrow for sure!

    1. Know that feeling! Crazy time of year. So glad that two quilts can go to the closet and out of sight. Now I just have simple hand piecing and hand quilting to enjoy thru the holiday when time permits. The last border of Baltimore Garden is haunting me, so I may find some time to at least finish prepping the pieces. Usually when that happens, I want to start the applique process but we shall see what time permits.

  12. Carla - what a great collection or projects. I love each one of the them! I've been seeing lots of TATW quilts. I'm so tempted to start but I think you need to use Facebook to join the group so that counts me out! Your Simple But Not is yet another quilt on my to do list! I love the rich caramel colours!

    1. Thanks Karen! I love using colored background in quilts. That solid is marcus brothers centennial cheddar. I just love the toned down cheddar color. My list gets longer and longer too. I am designing a medallion quilt with an eagle applique block in the center. If that goes well, I would really like to tackle a quilt like Monstrasity 81. Yes your quilt is really tempting me.

    1. I feel the same way when I see them! This is the first quilt a newbie should do. Watching how each round of fabric changes it is so informative. Definitely not a quilt that you want to use one line of fabric or matchy matchy fabric. My latest row is a red from Kansas Trouble, anything goes!
